My wife and I have had this for two months of intense juicing of cabbage and occasionally broccoli. My wife had multiple stomach and duodenal ulcers from medications due to a spinal injury and we combed the internet looking for studies on the best home remedies, as prescription antacids were not healing her. We chanced across two studies on raw cabbage juice healing ulcers in a matter of weeks, so that led me to research juicers.
There are four basic types of juicers. In order of general effectiveness (least effective to most effective) on greens, they are as follows:
1. Spinning blade/centrifugal ($50-$200)
2. Single-gear masticating (like this one) ($200-$350)
3. Double-gear masticating ($425-$550)
4. Hydraulic press w/shredder ($1,000-$2,500)
We were hoping the ulcers would heal quickly and I didn't plan to invest much. In reading the reviews on the spinning blade-type extractors, they seemed a poor choice for leafy greens, but quite good for fruits and other types of vegetables. One additional caveat I found was that juice from such juicers didn't keep that long, apparently due to oxidation and heat friction. My wife grew up with such a juicer and she had always enjoyed it, but she agreed it wouldn't work well for wringing juice from a cabbage.
Next came the single-gear juicers, and these varied from steel to melamine construction to a new high-tech super-hard GE plastic. Steel can oxidize fruit juice and melamine is a soft plastic that is most known for appearing in contaminated animal food from China, which in tests artificially appears as protein. Neither of these sounded good, but in reviewing the latest versions of the J8006/J8004 (they are identical except for the color and $40 difference), I found Omega was using GE Ultem, a plastic at least six times harder than melamine for the augur. This was a huge plus to me.
The double-gear juicers appear to get about 15% more juice out of the same amount of produce, but take quite a bit more time to clean. They are also twice the cost of single-gear juicers. This wasn't worth it to me.
Finally, the hydraulic press juicers get the most juice out, but can cost thousands of dollars. I couldn't find one under $800.
Our Experience:
I decided to get the J8004 and we went to town using it. It's been used probably 40 times so far for about 45 - 60 minutes each time. I make two quarts of cabbage juice at a time and it's refrigerated, with my wife drinking all of it within two days. At the end of the second day, if it's been kept sealed in the refrigerator, the juice tastes virtually identical to when it was juiced (just shake it up a bit because the juice settles).
Directions for the juicer say it shouldn't be used more than 30 minutes at a time. This isn't a problem, as I prepare two plates of cabbage leaves, juice them, turn off the machine, then prepare two more plates of leaves at a time.
The Omega leaves some juice in the pulp, which I now recapture by feeding the mash back through the machine. Strangely, the extra passes go very fast compared with the first one with the leaves, basically because the mash goes in the tube with absolutely no friction, and is much less volume to handle. In general, if you are juicing cabbage leaves, this is how each pass juices out if you got 600 milliliters with the first two platefuls:
1st time - 600 milliliters
2nd time - 150 ml more
3rd time - 50 ml more
4&5th time - 50 ml more total
Yes, the double-gear machines might get more each pass, but I figure that putting cabbage through three times is more than equal to putting the it through twice on a double-gear, and I save $250 for that net of one extra pass.
The unit has held up well and has never stained from all the greens touching it, so save forty dollars and get this over the silver J8006 twin (both units are superior to the J8005 because that unit, strangely numbered higher than this, uses a melamine auger and has only a 10 year warranty). The parts all rinse clean in no time, save for the two filtering portions on the cone the augur presses against. These require a brushing motion (one is included) to clean, and even then the part with the fine mesh retains some cabbage fiber. Fortunately, we put the parts in the dishwasher where anything remaining can be blasted off.
We've used it to mass-grind coffee with an included grinding option. It grinds a pound of coffee in about three minutes.
You can't go wrong with an Omega J8004 if you are juicing greens. We would definitely buy this again, but due to the incredibly long warranty, we don't expect to buy anything for over 15 years!
UPDATE: We've now used it more than 60 days on cabbage and broccoli and used it to make wonderful blueberry sorbet (using the second cone unit for grinding). Putting frozen wild blueberries into it makes a sorbet come out the end that if allowed to thaw, is a perfect cold blueberry juice. This summer we have been using it in this capacity far more than for cabbage. WONDERFUL! (NOTE: My wife's ulcers completely healed by the two month point, so we've moved on to juicing other items.)
I love this juicer! So far, I don't have anything negative to say about it. The pulp from the foods is pretty dry, so it does a good job of extracting the juice. I've put the pulp back through on a couple of the juices we've made and have gotten a little bit of additional juice out, but, really, this juicer does a good job on the first pass. I've mainly had success getting additional juice when I've put through citrus fruits; those seem to need a couple of pass-throughs to be really dry.
It's quiet, and, I think, operates at a reasonable speed. I read the reviews where other users felt that it was a hassle to cut up the foods first. I don't know about that. I do a lot of cooking, so, to be honest with you, the amount of prep that we go through to make up a batch of juice just doesn't seem like that big a deal. It's a couple of minutes, literally. Additionally, the juicer is easy enough to operate (and fun enough) that my eight-year old is LOVING the juicemaking.
It's also incredibly, incredibly easy to clean. My previous experience was with a centrifugal juicer and it was a major, major hassle. Cleaning the unit too more time than making the juice! This one breaks apart in a matter of seconds and it takes just a few minutes to rinse and wash the pieces. The most time is spent scrubbing the juice screen with a brush, but, again, it's a matter of seconds. The caveat? You absolutely have to wash it up *before* you drink the juice. I can't imagine how one would clean this if you let the veggie debris dry. So, no problem, make your juice, dissemble and wash the unit, then go and enjoy your healthful drink.
I don't know that I'd put a really soft fruit in it though. Foods like bananas, papayas, etc, may still be better blended up in your blender or food processor. Even the manual states that, if you're going to use the juicer for soft fruits, you should freeze them first. I would imagine that those types of foods would really make a mess in the juicer.
In summation, if you're looking for a juicer that is easy, efficient, and not too pricey, this one is a good choice.

This juicer is amazing. We are brand new to the juicing world and have not looked back since we bought it 2 months ago. It can juice everything! We started off with carrot/apple(granny smith) for the first month. Then got a little crazy and moved on to leafy greens. :) It can do anything! We have used carrot, apples, celery, cucumbers, swiss chard, kale, wheat grass, oranges, mango, kiwi, lemons, limes, ginger etc.. It does it all and with ease. As the opening is about a little smaller then the size of a english cucumber, you do need to cut your produce. I don't mind it at all. I find it relaxing actually and it cuts down on having to press the fruits and veges into the shoot if you cut it smaller, its really grabs on then and does its job. We always start with our softer things in first, then do the harder stuff after however sometimes alternate the product depending on how big of a juice that we are making. If you don't then sometimes if you are doing a lot of soft items the juice can start to back up so then we would chuck a few carrots in there and it clears it all out and you can go back to your soft items.
We have also tried making sorbet and that came out great.
Have yet to try nut butters and it can also make pasta and I can't wait to try those attachments too. I will update the review when we do.
Cleaning: This is what I was surprised about. It's nothing to clean this juicer. It only take a couple of minutes. It comes with a brush to clean. I found it very helpful however I found out a new brush that works even better. My daughters Avent bottle cleaner. That thing works so great to clean all of the pieces. It has nice soft bristles that is so much softer then the one that comes with it and does a way better job at cleaning the juice screen. If you buy this juicer you should pick up one of those bottle cleaners. It cuts the cleaning the screen time in half and you don't need to scrub like the other brush and doesn't feel like you would break the screen while your at it. One quick mention to machine part that locks the piece on. That sometimes get sticky and all that you need to do is run some warm soapy water around the turn piece and its gets rid of the juice that is in there making it sticky. Takes 2 seconds to do. I also found that after unlocking it from the machine that if I tip the front piece down, the juice doesn't leak out towards the machine and you don't need to clean that piece as often. I am sure everyone will find there way that they find easier.
Sound: It is so quiet. I have a 8 month old now and waking her up from her naps is not something that I would be happy about. I heard that noise was a problem with some of the juicers but this one is not the case. The juicer runs at 80rpm so it is a hum quiet and it does not kill any of the nutrients or enzymes in the mean time.
Pulp: It comes out so dry. When we first bought the juicer we were putting the pulp through twice to try to get every last drop out and then realized that there was barely even a difference after doing a once or twice test. It just made a bigger mess doing it twice. We buy organic produce and veges so getting our moneys worth is important. When we started doing leafy greens, we did end up putting that through twice. The wheat grass did make a noticeable difference when put through again but things like carrots made no real difference. Its a personal choice when it really comes down to it though.
After using it for 2 months there shows no sign of wear and tear yet for the most part. The only really noticeable difference is the color of the auger which is black, seems to be losing its color. Its kinda turning into a metallic kind of color now. Loosing its black. The white is a little stained from things like the carrots on the shoot. I found most of the color change came only in the first weeks when we were running things through twice. I don't care personally if its stained or not. If you may care then you can always spend the extra $40 and get the 8006 black model.
The perks of juicing: I mentioned that I have a 8 month old, well my hair was coming our in clumps after she was born. I seriously thought I was going bald and juicing had changed that. I have tons of new hair growth, My hair line has all new baby bangs(thats what I call them anyway) and it is so noticeable that my sister couldn't believe it when she saw me just a month later. The whites of my eyes are so clear and I am not tired all the time. I am getting so many nutrients in such a easy way that I clearly wasn't getting before. I would never be able to eat everything that I am juicing in a day. Easy for your digestive system to boot. I am a very stern mom when it comes to junk food or sweets as I worry about there teeth. My 6 year old loves helping out with juicing and loves the juice too. I never kept any in the house and now we all have it everyday and I don't feel guilty giving it to her as I know exactly what is in it and its organic. Even my 8 month old looks for it now. When she sees our morning carrot apple juice she is looking for a drink from our glass. When you can notice such changes it really makes you wonder what you were doing to your body before and really wish I started it sooner.
That's all I can think of right now. I will update it again once I use the attachments for the other possibilities that juicer can do.
