Why spend over $200-$300 on a burr grinder to grind coffee for yourself when you can get nearly the same results with this $33 Hario manual coffee grinder? Personally, I don't really know but if you had the money, I guess you really wouldn't care in the first place. If you are looking for one of the cheapest yet best way to grind your coffee beans each morning, look no further than the Hario MSS-1B Mini Mill. The results you'd get with this manual grinder can rival that of machines that costs double to triple the amount of this utility and in some cases, I am willing to bet those machines will lose in a grind off competition (results of grind, not speed).
Pros:
- This is perfect for those one to two cuppers like myself. I actually wanted to get a cheap electronic grinder and there are even some that are cheaper than this manual grinder! However, I think it was ridiculous to get one just for myself since no one else needs it.
- A burr grinder like this beats a blade grinder. From my knowledge, a blade grinder simply just "chops/hacks" up your coffee beans into tiny pieces. The results you'd get by using this method might not be consistent every time. A burr grinder on the other hand does not simply chop but actually "crushes" your beans. You'd get a much more consistent result. Also, because this manual grinder is powered by your hands and not an electric motor, there is less heat generated when you crush the beans. The hotter it gets when you crush/chop the beans actually decreases the quality of your cup of coffee.
- This grinder is not hard at all to grind. Please do not listen to the user reviews that claim this grinder is slow at grinding. I believe I can get a cup's worth of grinds in less than a minute or so and I didn't have to turn on super saiyan mode to do it. Although of course, the finer your grind, the more time will be needed. What I found odd was that your hand that actually cranks the handle round and round does not get tired. Instead, the hand that you hold the grinder actually gets tired! This is because you'd have to grip the grinder pretty tight in order for it not to wobble when you turn the handle. To be exact, it's your forearm that gets tired. So if you are right handed like me, then you would most likely hold the grinder with your left hand and it is your left forearm that would get tired. The fact that it has a cover helps a whole lot. I find it easier to slightly tilt the grinder while cranking away and the cover prevents the beans from flying out. While you can grind from a straight position and from a flat surface, I find that it's much harder to do it this way.
- Switching between grind levels is extremely easy as you simply hold the center of the handle with your thumb and twist the nut at the bottom of the grinder either left or right. To grind fine, you'd turn it right. For a coarse grind, you'd go left. Once you find the right combination for your drip and espresso, you'd just have to remember how many "clicks" you'd have to go for each one starting from the tightest position (rightmost position). For example, I use three clicks for my espresso grind. For my french press, I use 9 clicks. All I have to remember is which position I last set the grinder to. If its espresso, then I'd obviously just twist it to the left for 6 clicks (3+6=9) for my french press. To go back to an espresso grind, I'd twist it to the right for 6 clicks (9-6=3). It's that simple.
- The grind consistency you'd get from this grinder is very, very good. When it comes to espresso grinds, I am extremely pleased with this device. At 3 clicks, the grind is almost to a powder level and very fluffy in consistency. I can't imagine how the grinds will look like at just 1 click! Since everyone treats their coffee beans differently, you'd obviously have to play around with the settings a bit to get what you'd want. If you want absolutely control over your grinds, this is perfect for you perfectionists out there.
- Due to its small form factor, you can bring this with you wherever you go and still be able to enjoy fresh coffee every morning! Also, the noise level is at an extreme minimum. You can safely grind coffee in the morning without your neighbors thinking world war III just started.
Cons:
- The only con I can think of is the clean up process. While it's not extremely hard to do, it can be a hassle. The good news is that you can take this grinder completely apart. Each part is washable. For a good heads up video, simply search on Youtube for "Hario Mini Mill" and there is an awesome instructional video by Hario themselves showing you how to take apart as well as putting the unit back together piece by piece. The ceramic burr is a bit harder to clean because coffee grinds just cling to it, especially if you do a fine grind. Therefore, a simple "rinse" under the water isn't going to help at all. You'd need to actually soak it in hot water with some mild detergent to remove it. All the other parts you can easily rinse with water to clean if you wish. Personally, I'm not diligent enough to take apart this grinder for a wash after each grind. I'd probably do it each week or so.
As you can see, the amount of pro's clearly outweigh the con's. As long as this device holds up and doesn't break, I'd be a very happy guy. As long as you understand the audience this coffee grinder is meant for and if you find yourself fitting in that audience, you should come away satisfied as well.
The unit is easy to clean, easy to use, and quite good. The one thing I love about it is the cup marks on the side. For my French press, I use 12oz of coffee, I need 24oz of coffee. Sure enough, you can weigh it out, but 24oz of coffee, when ground, comes up to that little "2 cup" symbol. I use Peets Major Dickenson's ground course in a French press. Absolutely love the idea that I don't need a scale.
The best thing is if this unit dies after a year, it's easily replaced for cheap. Thing is, if other reviews are any indication, this thing will last much longer than a year. Save your money and buy this
First, I want to clarify that I am not expecting this product to give me the consistency of grind equivalent to a $200 electric burr grinder. This is a .5lb, $30, manual mill that is comprises of a net total of 12 parts that all come apart without using any tools, so the standards to which this product needs to stand up to will be modified to that class.
note: I need to clarify this because there are many individuals here that grade this product as if it is supposed to produce grinds that are equivalent to a $200 grinder, and thus, gives it a low star rating. There are the other extremists; who expect almost nothing, and upon realizing that this product actually grinds coffee beans decides to give it a 4 star rating just for that. Neither is my position. I also don't want to criticize this based on factors that this product is not responsible for, for example, someone complained that this product was difficult to use because they had arthritis in their thumb. There is a easy solution for this: don't get a manual mill. This is like saying a car is bad because I am blind; the issue is beyond the capacity of the car. There are others that said they get tired when they grind manually. WELL WHAT DID YOU EXPECT? I try to steer away from these obvious points/subjective opinions.
I want to be fair to this product and grade it for what it is, not what others that cost more or less can do.
Engineering: 4
Pros:
1. All of the parts come apart, thus allowing you to thoroughly clean all the parts that come in contact with the beans in any way.
2. All of its secure parts securely fastens; the lid is snug, the receptacle screws on nice and tight.
3. Easy to turn; that is, it consistently grinds a certain amount of coffee bean at any given point that it never gets too hard to turn. However, I am a relatively well built guy so I can power through 1 minute of grinding, and I can tell this can be a bit of a nuisance for everyone; but again, this is not the problem that a hand grinder can resolve, so I will not dock any points for this. I am merely noting for your convenience.
Con:
1. "Cover For Shaft" and "Washer" is not snug enough. You can refer to the "Material Guide" photo and you will see it listed there with there (Here is the URL just in casehttp://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61RMT7N45GL._SY450_.jpg) What that means is that the opening for where the shaft goes through is too large thus allowing the shaft to wiggle. I think this was a factor that I can hold against this product since it really doesn't take any more effort to make it slightly more accurate. This also leads to the problem of producing slightly more inconsistent grind AND the ceramic parts rub against each other.
2. The lever/handle is not very secure AND this causes the pentagonal shaft portion where it comes in contact with the lever to slowly wear away. There are other reviewers that say this portion got stripped, and this is the case. There is no way you can be 'careful' since it is almost impossible to not let this thing wiggle as you are grinding. Be warned, there is a good chance this product will fail around your 300th cup of coffee (which is about 5 hours of continuous grinding (given that it takes me 1 minute to grind 1 cup's worth of coffee). I feel like this can be EASILY alleviated with just a little bit more aluminum to make it more secure and thus making the product last for may be 3,000 cups of coffee at least. I've had this product for 2 months (and I've used it almost every day (perhaps 2-3 times a day even) and i can CLEARLY see that the nut is shaved off.
Coffee Grinds: 3.5
Pro:
1. For a $30 it definitely produces a good consistent grind; that is of course, if you take your other alternative to be blade grinders for $30. Again, I'm not going to compare the quality of grind with a $200 grinder (but even if I did compare it to a $200 grinder, I would probably give it a 3.5 (1 being a blade grinder and some cheap electric grinders will get a 3 (like the one from Mr. Coffee: horrible electric burr grinder for the price...))
Those of you who plan on using this for only drip will have no problem.
Con:
1. I want to say that you can't get a fine grind (so those who need 'dust' for turkish brew) might not get as satisfactory coarseness. But I hesitate to give it a lower score for this since I already docked points for it in the 'Engineering' section. Also due to engineering, the ceramic grinder will rub against each other, and I can't fail to feel like i'm drinking bits or ceramic...
Some opinions that won't count towards the review:
1. Why get a manual hand mill rather than a automatic grinder?
a. it's cheap. But again, there are drawbacks to this; you may want to invest in a $60-$90 range manual mill for its durability and better engineering that avoids the negative reviews this product got as explained above.
b. Great conversation starter. I carry this (and filter and cone dripper) around EVERYWHERE I go, primarily because I can't stand any other coffee like from Starbucks et cetera. I only drink from coffee beans that are roasted within 2-3 days so they are at the utmost freshness. This allows me to provide people that I have conversations with some AMAZING fresh coffee.
In case anyone reading this does not get coffee beans that have been roasted within 2-3 days before you drink it, you really should... don't just go to super markets and get whole beans off the shelf like Starbucks, Tully, Gevalia, Seattle's Best, Newman's, Peet's and so forth; god knows when they were picked, and when they were roasted, and how long they've been on the shelf.
If you're going to get a grinder, make sure you're also willing to take 1 more step in getting good coffee, since if you're not going to get good coffee...why are you getting a grinder? It's a contradiction to say you want good coffee, and not use good coffee. You'd be better off buying good coffee (like Inteligentsia, Verve, or your own from SweetMarias.com) and grinding your coffee at your local supermarket, than to do the opposite (that is, to get a grinder, but continue to buy whole beans that were roasted more than a week ago).
Hope this helped. Gl.

This turned out to be a great quality of grind, and fairly easy to crank. If I want a nicer grind than my electric grinder, and only need one cup or two, say for aeropress, this is my first choice.
